Close-up p 21.2. Politics. Speaking
1. What kind of events shake our politicians' standing in our society? Do some people believe that all politicians just want power to net astronomical amounts and line their own pockets for the rest of their lives? Do they have clear-cut evidence of that? Among what sectors of our society are these prejudices particularly prevalent? What can be done to overcome these prejudices? What could make them deviate from that position?
2. Do you think that our government's economic forecast is overly optimistic? Do you scoff at claims that our economy is on the rise? What aspects should they consider and factor into their decision making? Will righting the economy demand major cuts in expenditure?
3. Do you believe that the neighbours in Magaluf should take the law into their own hands and form a vigilante group to patrol the strip? Or do you think they should steer clear of it?
4. Is the role of the Opposition parties to belittle the efforts of the Government? Should they in all circumstances viciously attack the Government's proposals? What laws would you overrule?
5. Do you struggle to work up any enthusiasm for politics? Are you easily swayed by the politicians' good looks or their clever talk? What politicians have been very vocal in their criticism of the government's policy? Is their political discourse tinged with irony or sarcasm? Do you find it inspiring or underwhelming? When was the last time you were sold on a plan or an idea proposed by a political leader? For what kind of projects with a hefty price tag would you happily fork out the cash?
6. Should citizens stand up to rogue governments when they feel unfairly treated? How? Are riots the solution? Do you think it is better to remain blissfully ignorant of what's going on behind the scenes?
7. Do you watch TV shows that mock politicians? Do you find them funny or inappropriate?
8. Have voters raised the bar too high in terms of what should be expected from our politicians? Can we now obtain a greater wealth of information about what our politicians do than ever before? What would be the last straw for you?
9. What political parties do you think will withstand the test of time?
10. Are governments jammed between the external pressure of the global economy and internal forces of social change?
