Food production accounts for as much global greenhouse gas emissions as
all forms of transport combined. That’s why many scientists think we
can’t tackle climate change without addressing what we eat. So
– in this week’s Inquiry – we’re looking at alternative
climate-friendly diets and asking what it would take to move the world
towards them.
Listen to the programme
Speaking: food production
1. Can we eat our way out of climate change?
2. What alternative climate-friendly diets could be introduced to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?
3. What are the benefits of locally grown food?
4. Does genetically modified food pose a greater risk to human health than conventional food?
5. Are members of the public likely to perceive GM foods as safe?
6. Are GM foods banned or restricted in your country?
7. What are the public concerns
related to food safety, regulation, labelling, environmental impact,
and research methods of GM foods?
8. What do you think about the fact that some GM seeds, along with all new
plant varieties, are subject to plant breeders' rights owned by corporations?
9. What are the benefits of organic food? Does it contain pesticides? Does it have preservatives? Can organically raised animals be given antibiotics?
10. Can organic food be genetically modified?
11. What do you think of hydroponic food production (the use of mineral nutrient solutions to feed the plants in water, without soil)?
