KEY
1. the icing/ cherry on the cake 
The icing on the cake: something extra and not essential that is added to an already good situation or experience and that makes it even better. E.g. It's an added bonus—the icing on the cake. More goals would have been the icing on the cake.

Forbidden fruit: a thing that is not allowed and that therefore seems very attractive. E.g. It was like forbidden fruit, the more you knew you shouldn't have it, the more you wanted it.



6. has more holes (in it) than Swiss cheese
 More holes than Swiss cheese: If something has more holes than a Swiss cheese, it is incomplete,and lacks many parts. Something with a lot of problems. E.g. Your proposal has more holes in it than Swiss cheese.



7. as the best thing since sliced bread
The best thing since sliced bread: if you say that something is the best thing since sliced bread, you think it is extremely good, interesting, etc.Referring to something new and exciting, though often used ironically. E.g. Jack thinks he's the best thing since sliced bread.


8. are like two peas in a pod
be like two peas in a pod to be very similar. E.g. The twins are like two peas in a pod.


9. which side his bread is buttered (on)  
know which side your bread is buttered (on) understand how you can benefit from something or someone. E.g. He'll be there on time; he knows which side his bread is buttered on.

bread and butter the main part of your income. E.g. their bread and butter is reporting local events.

a tough cookie someone who is very determined to do what they want and who usually succeeds even in difficult situations. E.g. He's broken his leg, but he's a tough cookie, I think he'll carry on.


13. to chew the fat about
chew the fat to have a long friendly talk with somebody about something. E.g. Randall stayed chewing the fat for a while.



14. sour grapes for not
sour grapes used to show that you think somebody is jealous and is pretending that something is not important. E.g. He said he didn't want the job anyway, but that's just sour grapes.



15. on the gravy train
a/the gravy train used to refer to a situation in which someone can make a lot of money for very little effort: come to Hollywood and get on to the gravy train The financial system can no longer be a gravy train for the few at the expense of the many and their homes, pensions, livelihoods and communities. It's nothing more than a gravy train for big business to make huge amounts of money from the public purse



16. was keen as mustard
keen as mustard extremely eager or enthusiastic. E.g. Why don't we ask Tom to captain the cricket team? He's as keen as mustard.


17. can't cut the mustard
(not) cut the mustard: to (not) be as good as expected or required. E.g. I didn't cut the mustard as a hockey player.
